With turkey season being here before we know it I just thought I would have a give-away to get everyone pumped up a bit, that and it has been awhile since I have held one of these. Before I get to the how-to's of entering let me just tell you what I have.
First off Ed Blankinship from "Gobbler's End Turkey Calls" was gracious enough to donate a scratch box call. This type of call is small and compact but let me tell you that it has a nice sound to it and should get a response from some unknowing gobbler.

Ok, now for the how-to to enter this give-away. I plan to make this as simple and painless as possible so to enter you just need to answer one question and leave a comment. Then at the end the winner will be randomly picked from Random.org.
The question to answer in a comment is,
Question - What would you do to help preserve the outdoors?
Contest starts today February 25th. and ends Sunday at midnight on March 18th. The winner will then be drawn and announced the 19th.
The winner will have 48 hours to email me with a name and address and if not than a new winner will be picked.Good Luck to All!

My answer to the question would be to limit motorized vehicle access on public lands.
The popularity of ATV's leads to destruction of the habitat through thoughtless vehicle operation.
If I had the power, I would make the outdoors and conversation part of every school curriculum. We need to educate our kids on the power, strength and beauty of the outdoors and why they are important to us.
Wow I get to hunt and win prizes, Awesome stuff. I hunt www.peartreegameranch.com for deer. I never got a prize for hunting before, neato.
Spike,
I think you need to answer the question to be entered. At least that's how I understand it buddy.
Ed, you are correct. You have to answer the question.
There are several things I would do to help preserve the outdoors. My answer may be more specific to my home area (western Pennsylvania) than other parts of the nation in general, but the overall concept should be the same everywhere.
Here, we are considered the Saudi Arabia of natural gas, laying over top a formation called the Marcellus Shale. We need these resources to continue living in a modern society, but several companies around here are not doing their part to help preserve our wilderness. The biggest thing I can do here, without owning my own land and starting my own conservation program, would be to remain ever vigilant in ensuring these companies do their part to restore our environment to the levels it was before they mined the gas (or maybe even plant extra trees and shrubs to enhance the landscape).
The area I hunt was once strip mined, by my own father. He took extra care to ensure that they reclaimed the land as well as possible, and in the last several years we've shot some very nice deer (and turkey) in the area. The area is a prime location for wildlife, and it's all because of the care they took in putting everything back the way they found it. It is very, very possible to extract natural resources in an environmentally responsible manner without sounding like a wacko-hippie tree-hugger. But the companies coming to Pennsylvania from Texas don't have the harmonious relationship to the land that we do. If we let our guard down, me, my father, my friends, and my future children will regret it.
It's a little long winded, but I feel very strongly about this. I love the blog Rick, thanks for giving me a forum to share my opinion.
To conserve the outdoors, I would like the school systems to be mandated to have a three week summer session for kids 9-13 that focuses on nature, land conservation, wildlife, hunting, and fishing.
Off the bunny huggers!
My answer is a simple suggestion:
When I'm out hunting, fishing, walking the dog, etc. I try to pick up, carry out, and properly dispose of some of the trash I come across.
Think of how much better the outdoors would be if more people did this.
Even if it's not the prize winner I intend to keep it up and congrats to whomever wins.
Always leave the area cleaner than when I arrived. Also volunteer for public area cleanup days. I can't believe the trash some people leave laying around!!!
To help preserve the out doors I do a few things. I have joined many organizations that help contribute back to conservation and habitat for the animals I hunt. I also try to leave the forest cleaner than how I found it. I will pick up trash and take it out of the woods.
To help preserve the outdoors , I will do my part to do just that when I am out there , and spread the awareness of the need to do so whenever possible to whomever I speak with . Leave no trace is my Motto while in the woods , and I will generally bring out more than I brang in as far as trash from the careless boobs that inhabit the gamelands around here .
AND I WILL ALWAYZ VOTE PRO GUN .

I think by stopping people who hunt illegally would help alot for those who over fish and get over there limits and stop poaching we loosing alot of animals because of poachers we need to help out pick up stuff we see at places like trash because animals suffer from that kinda thing.Hunting is awesome and fishing and we would love for our future grandchildren to have the same kinda values as we have
What needs to happen is, each state needs to increase the number of wardens per county. In my state its usually two per county. The presence of the warden has a huge impact on illegal activities. Wardens go through alot of training yearly and are often out of the county to do so and it gets taken advantage of.
Along with education for children we need to improve the public's opinion of hunters. The ethical hunters out there will need to do their best to help all of us look better and attempt to teach the "slob" hunters out there that they are hurting all outdoorsmen with their lack of respect for the wildlife and the law. As a sportsman I would make sure the profit from anything to do with outdoors by the state stays in the accounts they belong in and are reinvested in the outdoors, NOT added to the general fund.
